The 9348 ha Blouberg Nature Reserve is located 120 km north-west of Polokwane and 420 km north of Johannesburg. Situated in the lowveld of northern Limpopo Province, the Blouberg Nature Reserve is graced with a beautiful mountain surrounded by typical Lowveld bushveld and is a core conservation area within the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve. It is ideally located en-route to the famous Tuli Block in Botswana, Mapungubwe World Heritage Site and National Park, and is in close proximity to the Makgabeng rock art destination. The diverse topography lends itself to a rich ecosystem. Boasting unique vegetation features such as the Tambotie woodland, fig forest, baobabs and the Brak River flood plain, it has possibly the largest variety of tree species for any similar size reserve in the country. With this large variety of trees comes a prolific and diverse bird population. It is one of only six provincial nature reserves that is home to a breeding program for sable antelope and also hosts a successful disease-free Cape buffalo breeding program.
Blouberg Nature Reserve is a hidden gem and home to the biggest breeding colony of Cape vultures in the world. This breeding colony hosts more than 1000 breeding pairs. Visitors can view these birds at close range, either from below the breeding colony or at the vulture restaurant. Visitors can also book a guided Vulture Trail which takes them to visit the plateau above the colony, and experience a face-to-face encounter with the vultures in flight.
