D'Nyala Nature Reserve

Situated 10 km from the town of Lephalale en route to Botswana, this distinctively striking and tranquil resort gets its name from the massive Nyala tree that is characteristic of the area and is also the southernmost habitat of the famous Baobab tree. The game reserve is home to the nyala antelope, as well as 60 other mammal species including white rhino, giraffe, waterbuck, zebra, tsessebe, eland and others. A variety of predators have been spotted such as Leopard, Brown Hyena, Jackal, and smaller cats, while some impressive Nyala Berry and Baobab trees can be encountered here.

Highlights:

D’Nyala is of great historical significance. It was here that the peace talks were held before the democratic transformation in South Africa.

To prepare for the resumption of negotiations, the ANC and the NP held a 'bosberaad' on the 2-5 December 1992. The venue, a nature reserve in the north-west of the country called D'Nyala, was ideal. While this meeting did not conclude any substantive agree¬ments, the real success of the meeting lay in the fact that it allowed the negotiators to strike up a personal rapport with each other. This proved invaluable in allowing them to work with each other through difficult negotiations. In the two years that the ANC was unbanned, this bosberaad was the first opportunity that these negotiators had to interact with each other at a social level and to get to know each other as people rather than as opponents.
