Located just off the R71 outside Haenertsburg where the Drakensberg meets the Strydpoort Mountains, the 22 000 ha Wolkberg Nature Reserve is a hiker's paradise. The remoteness and sheer splendour of this awe-inspiring 22 000 ha reserve, encompassing sheer cliffs, folded and interlocking spurs, densely forested ravines and crystal clear streams, lends itself to spectacular and challenging hiking trails.
With the unpredictable weather in this area, quarzitic cliffs like the Serala, Steilkoop and Tandberg (sometimes called the knuckles) are a challenge even for the fittest of hikers. The trail from the Serala plateau over Kruger se Neus, through Wonderwoud Forest, requires rock climbing skills and equipment as well. The Wolkberg Wilderness Reserve is particularly rich in birdlife so be sure to bring along your binoculars on all your hikes. Birders can delight in spotting the hamerkop, bat hawk, lilac-breasted roller, the black-collared as well as pied barbets, pearl-breasted swallow and the gorgeous crested francolin.
